One more fight in Byron Shire

Mullumbimby, 31/10/2009. A Halloween Party on Saturday night at the Old Drill Hall in Mullumbimby was the latest scuffle between our local teenagers. There always was a bit of rivalry between kids from Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and Ocean Shores. Of course, most of the time there are no problems in living, working and playing together. The problem often starts with alcohol. Once our youth are "under the influence" a display of pride, heroism, fighting skills and stupidity follows.

The blame should not be with our young people only. Adults are guilty as well. Having a large party of over 100 teenagers, alcohol available and no organised security for the event is asking for trouble. Police were present from 9pm until 11:30pm, during that time they confiscated alcohol and several teenagers were taken home due to being intoxicated.
Several injuries occurred during the fight. One 18 year old boy was taken to a Brisbane hospital in an attempt to save his eye, another youth had a beer bottle smashed over his head and a few more boys received lesser injuries.

Who started the fight and who injured who is not known. A few teenagers will learn a lesson from this event. Some of them will think it was a 'cool' night. This type of problem will always be there... young people are full of energy, impulsive behaviour and let's say they think less and do more. The only thing we (the adults) can do is to manage it as painlessly as possible.
A large part of the responsibility lays with parents of those boys involved. Good parenting will have a good influence on the young developing mind.
Bad kids are products of bad parents. When police deliver a drank kid to their parents, they should charge them $1,500 for the 'delivery'. This fee will improve parenting in the Shire.
